Dr David Sudmalis

Director - Arts Tasmania

Dr Sudmalis was appointed Director in September 2016. He has extensive experience working in arts policy, strategy and analysis with a decade’s experience working at the Australia Council for the Arts, finishing there as Director of Emerging and Experimental Arts.

Amongst other things, David ran the Australia Council's AIR - Artist in Residence program, and has worked across community arts and cultural development, emerging and experimental arts, youth arts, young and emerging artist development, and arts education. He is a passionate advocate for all-ages aesthetic education and dedicated to continual improvement in processes that strategically serve the sector.

David holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Sydney. He is a published research academic, composer, performer, and media artist. His thesis (Gesture in Composition: A model of composition involving gesture, gestural and parametric development, and hybridisation as examined in six original compositions) is universally regarded as a cure for insomnia.
