About the Tasmanian Government Art Site scheme
The Tasmanian Government Art Site scheme (formerly APBS - Art for Public Buildings Scheme) was the first of its kind to be established in Australia. Its creation demonstrated a visionary understanding of the way in which art works enrich both public buildings and spaces in the public arena.
The scheme enhances the general public's access to and understanding of contemporary art and reflects the diversity and skill of the Tasmanian artistic community.
The scheme facilitates all stages of the commissioning process for public artworks that are located in state government buildings and spaces across Tasmania.
In operation for 25 years, the value of the program is recognised by government departments, the construction industry and the state's architects and artists who are alert to the potential for artworks offered by any new public building project. The program has also created a vital public face for the state's professional artistic community, providing an interface between artist and the general public.
How it works
The scheme is based on the agreed principle that two percent of the pre-tender estimate for all new State Government buildings and renovations is allocated from the purchase and commissioning of art works. The upper limit on art works for each project is $80000 with the scheme currently managing over 30 individual projects each year with an annual public art budget of approximately $1 000 000.
Applications for commissions are open to professional Tasmanian artists.
