NEW AGE: NEW MEDIA is a cultural exchange project that explores how contemporary video artists portray aspects of the social and cultural life of two very different countries – China and Australia.
The exhibition will form part of the larger program of cultural events associated with Imagine Australia, a series of celebrations marking the Year of Australian Culture in China 2010-2011.
Imagine Australia provides opportunities to strengthen and build long-term cultural relationships between contemporary arts communities and artists working across Australia with those working China.
The NEW AGE: NEW MEDIA exhibition is curated by Reg Newitt and involves 12 established new media artists from both Australia and China and incorporates exhibitions in 8 locations – four in China and four in Australia.
The thematic rationale of the exhibition takes a broad interpretation of ‘social environments’ as the curatorial idea under-pinning the selection of artworks.
The video and digital works reflect on a range of personal and social issues - self-reflection; marginalised and displaced groups; values and beliefs; gender; the environment; social conflicts and social mores. Moving, humorous and revealing, the social and personal histories intersect and question stereotypes of Australia and China.
According to Curator Reg Newitt the exhibition “seeks to reveal aspects of contemporary art and life in a range of situations, relevant to both Australia and China.”
Furthermore “The project aims to provide an avenue for discourse on contemporary art forms, culture and social issues in this period of history – the New Age – and by so doing, to promote contemporary Australian art, culture and society in China as unique, as ordinary and sophisticated, self-effacing and confident, generous and confident.”
