Feedback from the expert peers

The peers discussed the overall quality of the applications to the 2021-22 round of Education Residencies and made the following comments:

  • Applications that included concepts that would challenge and benefit the applicant’s own practice were more likely to be supported by the peers.
  • Applicants were encouraged to focus on how they would benefit from a residency.
  • Applications that included highly structured plans for engaging with students and saw the artist assume the role of teacher were less likely to be supported. Applicants were encouraged to balance planning with flexibility.
  • Established artists were particularly encouraged to explain how a residency would benefit them, and help to develop them further.
  • Applicants were encouraged to include letters of support that spoke to the timeliness and benefits of a residency for their professional and artistic practices.
  • Collate and curate support material into a single PDF or list on a website for the assessors to easily view.
  • Applications that referenced connection to place or land should consider whether they could consult or collaborate with members of the Tasmanian Aboriginal community.
