Feedback from the expert peers

The peers gave the following feedback to help current and future applicants:

  • The peers encouraged all applicants (whether new or experienced) to contact Arts Tasmania to make sure applications were in line with the program guidelines.
  • Applicants should write in the first person, in plain English and avoid unnecessary artform specific language or jargon.
  • Applicants should consider the residency site in detail to make sure it is well-suited to the proposed activities.
  • Stronger applications in this round included:
    • an introduction providing a clear summary of the planned activities
    • evidence of planning such as an indicative timeline or schedule, to give peers confidence that the proposed activity is achievable and realistic
    • information around the potential outcomes following the residency
    • a clear relationship between the residency site and the artist’s proposed activity or project
    • showed the residency in the context of the applicant’s current arts practice and how the residency would help inform their next body of work and/or the timeliness of the opportunity.
  • The peers encouraged applicants to include letters of support from credible or highly regarded professionals that were able to speak to the relevance and impact of the opportunity for the applicant’s practice.
  • Applicants were encouraged to provide context for letters of support to assist peers from other artform areas to understand the expertise of the letter writer, as well as the relationship between the letter writer and the applicant.
  • Applicants were encouraged to carefully curate support material by including attachments and web links that are relevant to the application.
  • Web links should take assessors directly to the chosen work or article rather than a generic website or homepage.

The support material limits outlined in the application form should not be exceeded.
